We partnered with a foundation called Winds of Peace to bring in the coffee from Nicaragua. The coffee economy in Nicaragua is a bit disorganized compared to some of its neighboring countries but that doesn’t discourage us from finding the gems this producing country has to offer. A lot of coffee grown and sold in Nicaragua is facilitated through COOPs, but most cooperatives in Nicaragua were formed by state or international aid agencies to channel resources to rural populations. The end result is a plethora of organizations in Nicaragua with cooperative in their name, but whose actions do not reflect local initiative nor buy in, two key elements to the cooperative movement. Winds of Peace is looking at other ways to make an impact outside of COOPs, which led them to build community social enterprises, which promote local initiative and investment. We are excited to share this balanced and comforting profile with you.
